I'm elated to have the time and space to work at VCCA from May 26-June 12, to focus on the editing/production of video/image components for my multimedia project Feeling Tones.
Feeling Tones, Selections from Image Repository, 2022-2023 |
Feeling Tones is a multi-layered media project exploring how we construct our beliefs about human consciousness and a possible afterlife, with a particular focus on how abstraction, imagery, and non-linear narrative help us process discomfort and imagine decisions based on assumptions about our lives and deaths. Taking the form of archive and installation, the project centers embodied memory, a process complicated by the uncertainty of death.
The project framework is a media repository, where future memories are captured, collected, stored, and retrieved, to translate intangible experiences into more permanent, shareable forms. As content, this guides a collection of simulations called workshops, created to feature in the installation. These brief programs center user-experience as a model to communicate and transfer visceral, instinctual, and sensory knowledge.
Situated inside communal workstations, workshops are fabricated as media displays (video/still/audio), prompting participants to sit, read images, listen to sounds, and attend to subtle bodily connections together. Ultimately, Feeling Tones engages audiences as both experiences, and as part of a larger discussion about how our minds and bodies conceptualize life and death.
