DIALOGUES

I am pleased to be sharing my work in DIALOGUES, the inaugural exhibition for STABLE in Washington, D.C. curated by Jordan Amirkhani.

Ignited by beginnings, my photograph Debra, Room 1006 (far R.), from the project Residence (2001-2004) is on view.

The images from the Residence series represent relationships I developed with women living in the YWCA residence hall in downtown Brooklyn over the course of three years. These portrayals of their small living spaces and possessions, painstakingly made with a 4x5 field view camera, reveal the tastes, desires, and values of women whose lives are circumscribed by limited options. Although the images are absent of people, they imply a larger narrative about the women who live there. They also point to the changing dynamics of a Brooklyn neighborhood in the throes of rapid development.
