Residence - 10 years later

I will be participating in a public program at BRIC Rotunda gallery on Friday, February 10th from 7-9 pm.  In connection with Figured, a group exhibition featuring a few of my photographs, I will present a slide show of images from Residence, the photography project I conducted from 2002-2004 at the Downtown Brooklyn YWCA Residence Hall for Women.

It's been almost 10 years since I created Residence, a project that was grounded in the relationships I formed with the women tenants while making intimate photographs of their individual rooms.  In 2003, I presented the slide show to the women-in-residence and people from the surrounding neighborhood at community gardens in Brooklyn.

Re-visiting the slides, I am reminded of how much this part of Brooklyn has been transformed in the past decade.  Flatbush Avenue, Atlantic Yards, the Williamsburg Bank Building (formerly full of dentists offices and a breathtaking bank on the ground floor)--all have undergone (and will continue to undergo) massive change.  Yet the YWCA Residence Hall still operates, providing safe and affordable housing for 214 women aged 19-95 and empowering women since its doors opened in 1888.  I hope that presenting Residence now, to a new audience, will encourage viewers to think about the importance of continuity and stability in our public institutions during times of significant change.

Please join me at Rotunda on February 10th if you're interested in seeing the slide show.  There will be a few other performances as well (but I cannot say I know what they will consist of!)  The group exhibition closes March 3.
